Salvia is the Latin word for sage. It is a genus of plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae.
The name Salvia derives from the Latin salvere, which means "to heal."
Many peoples from Romans to Native Americans have used sage for its healing properties. It is said to be useful in clearing negative psychic influences and even banishing malign spirits. Purification has always been a use of sage.
Sage can grow in a variety of climates, but northern Americans probably only hear of the desert growing varieties in Carlos Castaneda novels.
