Buddha Statue - suar wood

Wood Buddha, seated in meditation, right hand is in a teaching mudra - hand-carved in Bali by I-Mad'e Dane, from suar wood. Approximately 20 inches tall - weight 12 lbs. I (ee) Mad'e (mah-dey) Dane (dah-ney) has been carving since he was eleven years old. Born in 1978 in the district of Ubud in the village of Singekerta, Bali. He comes from a long lineage of carvers; his father began teaching Mad'e the family craft at the age of eleven.

These statues, being carved from tropical wood and rather massive, often develop a crack from the base, sometimes as far up as the hand resting in the lap, under very dry conditions--like winter in the north here. Then, as humidity returns, these cracks narrow and are often no longer visible.

The historical Buddha, born to the Gautama family and given the name Siddhartha, approximately 2500 years ago, somewhat more than 200 years before the Maurya king Asoka (273-232 before common era 'BCE').

There have been many Buddhas, but Shakyamuni is the one who has made it easiest to achieve liberation through practice of meditating on him. His pure land is open to anyone who has the devotion and desire to go there, whereas the pure lands of other Buddhas sometimes have very particular rules about who can and cannot enter.

Shakyamuni promised, "Whosoever visualizes me with a combination of concentration and devotion, in front of them I will be, even if they cannot see me; and I will never forsake them."
